Mammoth Hot Springs Terrace

Summer of 2011

I spent the summer of 2011 working at Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel and exploring the magical world of Yellowstone National Park . The near-by Mammoth Terraces mesmerized me - an ever changing and surrealistic landscape of free flowing waters over travertine hills. The hills and basins , formed by calcium carbonate deposits, are tinted in earthy hues by the thermophilic bacteria that thrive in the warm water pools . The 170 F. water ebbs and flows according to seismic activity and slowly envelopes trees , boulders and anything else in it's path. Strolling the network of Terrace boardwalks at all hours of the day and night, photographing the dance of light on the warm pools and the hills , was one of my gifts this summer.
