The Yellowstone Park Foundation
JUNE 2011

In This Issue
From the century-old Roosevelt Arch to the spectacular lobby of the Old Faithful Inn, history is all around us in Yellowstone. But preserving the past takes some effort, and that’s where the Yellowstone Park Foundation comes in. In this issue we’ll tell you about our latest project to protect the park’s cultural treasures by rehabilitating an historic building near Old Faithful.  Also, if you enjoy history, find out here how to schedule a free tour of Yellowstone’s Heritage and Research Center. And speaking of “free,” remember that the first day of summer is a fee-free day in Yellowstone, and check out our link to a schedule of free, ranger-led summer programs.

Plans are underway for a gathering place that pays tribute to the photographic legacy of Yellowstone National Park. Millions of annual visitors walk by the historic Haynes Photo Shop at Old Faithful, unaware of its storied and interesting past. The Yellowstone Park Foundation will breathe new life into the building, and offer new ways to enjoy Yellowstone images.

In Yellowstone, there’s a treasure trove of 20,000 rare books and manuscripts, 90,000 photographs, 35,000 archeological artifacts, and much more. If you’ve entered the park through the Roosevelt Arch at the North Entrance, you’ve driven past it. The Yellowstone Heritage & Research Center (HRC) is home to the park’s priceless library, archive, and museum collection and offers free tours all summer.

Yellowstone Youth Facility Gets a Facelift

Yellowstone YCC
Learn More
Yellowstone Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) staff and enrollees complete many important projects in the park each summer, but the YCC facilities -- mess hall and dorm -- were both showing the wear and tear of 35 years of use.  The park decided it was time to spruce up the facility for the youth and program staff.
