Slough Creek Wagon Road Restoration

The Slough Creek area in Yellowstone National Park is well known for its quiet front-country campgrounds, blue ribbon fly-fishing, and a wagon road that provides easy access to the spectacular back-country. During the spring, sections of the road used to become so muddy that visitors and wagons are forced to leave it. In doing so, the adjacent vegetation was trampled. Culverts, which had been placed over stream crossings where heavy water flow during the spring floods the road, were old and in need of replacing. The condition of the road was so poor that waiting any longer to restore it would have resulted in more serious damage. The Slough Creek Wagon Road Restoration project installed new culverts, repaired the adjacent sections of eroded road, and restored damaged vegetation. The design of the culverts allows them to fit into the natural surroundings, increases their life span and the flow of water through them, and makes them easier to clean. In addition, 75 feet of boggy road base were filled with a hard and durable material. This project greatly enhanced the aesthetics of the wagon road, increased erosion control near stream crossings and wetlands, and now allows for easier, more effective maintenance.
