Brink of the Lower Falls Trail Restoration

The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone provides spectacular vistas, a beautiful array of colors, and a view of the majestic plunge of the Upper and Lower Falls into the Yellowstone River below. Each year, hundreds of thousands of visitors are drawn to this majestic canyon vista, located on the North Rim Drive loop road just south of Canyon Village. Here, the Brink of the Lower Falls Trail winds almost a mile down steep switchbacks to the viewing platform, a stone's throw from the crest of the 308-foot Lower Falls. This trail is bordered by over 7,000 square feet of historic rock retaining walls, steps, culverts, drains, and railings - all of which are deteriorated from age, wear, heavy usage, and a lack of proper drainage. Because the Park has only been able to maintain this trail on a "patch-work" basis, a large-scale restoration is needed to mitigate further damage. This restoration project involves repairing the trail's unique historic structures and, when completed, will help ensure visitor safety.

Total Project Cost: $18,630
