Fawn Pass Trail Restoration

The highly popular Fawn Pass Trail, in the northwest corner of Yellowstone, provides hikers and anglers a route from US Highway 191 (near Big Sky, Montana) to Mammoth Hot Springs. It also offers access to Fan Creek, Sportsman Lake, and Bighorn Pass Trails, as well as a variety of day-trip loops increasingly used by park visitors. This area is rich habitat for moose, grizzly bears, and elk. Part of the trail traverses the Gallatin River through low-lying boggy areas that contain sensitive riparian vegetation. During the spring run-off, the trail is obscured by numerous compacted gullies and standing ponds of water. Hikers seeking adjacent, drier routes are inadvertently aggravating trail and resource damage. Funds for this project are being spent on trail rehabilitation and the repair of large-scale damage.

Total Project Cost: $21,482
