Boiling River Trail Restoration

The Boiling River a section of the Gardner River that is fed by underground thermal springs is one of the most popular attractions in the Mammoth area. But increased use of this natural swimming feature has resulted in serious concerns over human impact and erosion of the surrounding environment. To repair the damage caused by years of heavy use, in 1999 the Yellowstone Park Foundation raised funds to repair the first two-thirds of the trail, and in 2002 raised funds to restore the remaining third. The last section of the trail, near where visitors enter the river to soak, had been so eroded by the Gardiner River that it dangerously overhangs the thermal features below it. The entrance to the river also has been seriously impacted by visitor use so that thermal and vegetative resources have been damaged. Funding for this project was used to alleviate the problems of overuse and ensure the safety and continued enjoyment of visitors to the Boiling River area.
