Winter Park Access

Yellowstone National Park’s South Entrance receives an average of 10-12 feet of snow during the winter. Frequent high winds and the immense size of the area make travel for visitors and Park employees difficult. For duty-stationed Rangers, simply getting from home to the district Ranger Station and in and out of the South Entrance is a monumental challenge. Currently, the South Entrance Rangers are grooming and packing area access trails with a 1986 double-track snowmobile. This 20-year old machine is dirty, inefficient, and has outlived its useful life. Funding for this project will be used to purchase a new, best-available-technology snow machine. This cleaner, quieter machine will be used to pack and groom ski and walking trails for visitors and Park employees as well as to respond to backcountry incidents, avalanches, and search and rescue missions.

Total Project Cost: $38,890

Funds Still Needed: $38,890
