Bear-Safe Campgrounds

The restoration of the grizzly bear and subsequent delisting has been deemed a great success for species preservation. However, for the conservation of bears, it is important to minimize adverse human interactions, such as conflicts that arise from conditioning to human food. Bear-proof food storage containers are a user-friendly and proven means to keep human foods safely away from bears. Unfortunately, less than 25% of the Park's roadside campgrounds have bear-proof storage containers. Requested funds would allow the Park to acquire bear-proof food storage containers and thus reduce the risk of bear-inflicted human injuries and the number of bears that become conditioned to human foods. The successful implementation of this project would maintain Yellowstone’s leadership in grizzly and black bear management and human-bear conflict prevention.

Cost per Container: $950 (includes installation costs)
