Dark Skies – Fort Yellowstone Area
The night sky is one of Yellowstone’s most precious resources. However, light pollution from the Park’s developed areas unnaturally brightens Yellowstone's popular night sky and diminishes the "Yellowstone experience" for visitors. Beginning in 2003 with extensive night-lighting research, Park staff discovered that improving Yellowstone's current outdoor lighting system requires much more than simply replacing or removing light bulbs. New lighting standards dictate that fixtures must direct light downward, be energy efficient, and complement Yellowstone’s historic character. With support from the Yellowstone Park Foundation, the Park's landscape architects designed and installed fixtures to correct night lighting pollution problems in the Old Faithful and Lake Hotel areas. Now Park staff are expanding their efforts to protect Yellowstone's night sky in the historic Fort Yellowstone area of Mammoth Hot Springs. Funds will be used to correct and improve outdoor lighting issues and will include new, historically relevant fixtures and lamps that reduce energy use and light pollution.
Total Project Cost: $51,670
Funds Still Needed: $31,670
