The current visitor center at Old Faithful is located adjacent to the icon of the National Park movement: Old Faithful Geyser. Nearly 3,000,000 people visit Old Faithful every year. Unfortunately, the existing Old Faithful Visitor Center is poorly located, poorly designed, has no interpretive exhibits, and does little to enhance the visitor experience.
Even though there are more geysers and hot springs in Yellowstone than in the rest of the world combined, most visitors leave the park without a basic understanding of the rare and precious geysers they see or the volcanic activity beneath the surface.
A new Visitor Education Center in the heart of Yellowstone National Park will enhance the experience of visitors -- both onsite and online -- and their understanding of Yellowstone.
The $15 million in private funds to design and build the Old Faithful Visitor Education Center were donated to the Yellowstone Park Foundation from 2000 through 2005 by generous friends to match $11 million of federal funding for the project. In addition to funding from corporations and foundations, more than 400 individuals made donations ranging from two dollars to three-million dollars.
