Fund Initiatives

Fisheries Fund
Yellowstone National Park supports some of the world's most famous and highly coveted fisheries, and has been a destination for generations of anglers. It is also a last stronghold for native fish in the region. In recent years, however, prolonged drought, introduced species, and disease have imperiled the Park's native Yellowstone and westslope cutthroat trout populations. This situation, if left unaddressed, will have a lasting impact throughout the ecosystem. The continued decline of the Park's native fish could be particularly devastating for birds of prey, the magnificent grizzly bear, and other species for which these fish are a vital food source. Also, should Yellowstone and westslope cutthroat be listed as endangered species, angling opportunities could be greatly reduced and management efforts complicated.

The magnitude of these problems and the accelerated rate at which they are occurring are straining Yellowstone's resources. The Yellowstone Fisheries Fund Initiative is a call to action - action urgently needed to protect and preserve native fish in Yellowstone National Park.

The Yellowstone Park Foundation, recognizing the importance of native trout to the viability of the Yellowstone ecosystem and the future of fishing in the Park, thus raised funds for a $500,000 Fisheries Fund Initiative. This Initiative is supporting science and research of the highest caliber that will inform Park management decisions with regard to the protection and preservation of native cutthroat trout in Yellowstone National Park.

The Yellowstone Fisheries Fund Initiative will be instrumental in preserving native cutthroat trout and assuring that angling forever remains an important core activity within our country's first national park. With your support we will ensure the longevity of Yellowstone's native fish and safeguard an ecosystem that supports the rich diversity of wildlife we hope to leave for generations to come.
